While February was the month I would like to forget, March has been fantastic – full of friends, good health, good training, camps, speaking and sunshine! I packed so much into 10 days just to make up for a less than stellar 28 days in February! It is onward and upward for sure.

I spent a total of 5 weeks on IV antibiotics. I stayed very positive for most of the treatment but there were a few days in the last 10 days that were rough. The first 2 weeks only resulted in an increase of 4% lung function bringing me from 66% to 70%. That is not very impressive after all, this is intravenous medicine – 2 drugs – 3 times per day! So, they switched my medicine to another 2 drugs which meant that I was going to be on IV for at least another 2 weeks. One of the new antibiotics – Aztrenem – was in powder form and I would have to mix it once per day with distilled water and then put it in a saline drip bag for infusion. I was a real chemist. And I had to run the IV antibiotics 4 times per day – 6 a.m., 2 p.m, 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. The first 4 days on the new medicine had a huge effect and I was so excited. I was coughing less, my voice sounded better and my heart rate was coming down during exercise. Then it kind of settled and there were not many changes. I would go to the doctor with huge excitement to see what my numbers were up to only to see very little change. I was getting tired and cranky – not depressed – but if I wasn’t going to get better, then set me free from this medical routine and let me huff and puff my way up and down the 25 meter pool or run miles in the Caledon hills and pound out some watts on my computrainer!

Finally, after 3 more weeks, the doctors saw that my lung function had plateaued at 76% (up a total of 10% from 66% when I started IV) and my white blood cells were lower and they saw that I had already applied sunscreen for my anticipated trip to Florida - so they removed my PICC line catheter and my days of IV were officially over! They sent me away with an inhaled version of one of the IV meds and so I inhale it into my lungs twice per day to stay in control of the bacteria. Within 20 hours of having the PICC line removed, Dave and I were singing along with Sirius Satellite radio in our Subaru Outback driving south!

Since we arrived in Clermont, life has been bliss! My health seems to improve every single day! My lung function may only say 76% but I feel like a new person and I am swimming, biking and running and feeling fantastic. My first few swims were rough and my atrophied swim muscles were sore (I wasn’t able to swim at all and could not really use my left arm very much because of the PICC line) – but I didn’t care. I was swimming and I was alive and I just figured that the pool had ‘grown’ some extra length while I was gone!

Within a few days of arriving, we welcomed our athletes to our first Sunny Subaru Success Camp. Each day was filled with crazy athletic adventures – Carole mastering her new bike and running an unbelievable 10 miler, Connie gaining some 70.3 confidence with every session, Bob finding some length on his swim stroke, Madi working hard and showing a work ethic well beyond her years, Rose laughing and telling stories even when tired on a long run, Bonnie demonstrating her cycling skills to our younger stars, Jen running stronger and smiling wider each day and Jody finding her gluts during running hill intervals! There were lots of laughs especially when Connie finished her big ride and said ‘give me Green beer!’ It was St. Patrick’s Day and that meant a social opportunity and Super Dave organized our jaunt to the Celebration Town Tavern to celebrate!

Meanwhile, on the Thursday of our camp, I snuck out in the morning while the athletes recharged for our midday long run, and I did a motivational speech for a software company in Orlando. That was my first of 3 speeches in 10 days! When the camp ended on Friday, I caught a flight to Boston for the Multisport World Expo. On the Saturday, I did a clinic on how to run a successful Ironman marathon and then I delivered the keynote speech. I finished out the day with a computrainer time trial. Karen Smyers was also there – she was far more serious than I was – I rode in running shoes and toe clips – but I had such a blast! Then I caught a flight home. Seven days later, I did it all again. I flew to Washington, DC and delivered the keynote speech for the Multisport World Expo. I also did a swim relay for charity and a few Q and A sessions.

This is Kurt, Dave’s athlete, in Boston at the Multisport World Expo

It was amazing to be so busy and to be healthy enough to be that busy and still love it. I am grateful that my body and lungs are allowing me to be busy and to still feel good. Don’t worry, I am still respecting my therapies and my medicine and I am eating healthy and listening to my body.

The day after I returned from Washington, I was off to cheer on the athletes at the Clermont Triathlon. Morgan Locke came from the US Virgin Islands to race. I have been coaching Morgan since January. He is the son of my long time homestay in St. Croix. I have known Morgan since he was 10 or 11 yrs old – now he is 24 years old. He is an amazing swimmer but an even better human being - an absolute pleasure to be around. When I came in at 1 a.m. from my flight from Washington, there were flowers waiting for me and a welcome home note from Morgan and Carrie, his girlfriend! Morgan had a superb race bettering his 10 km run from 46 minutes on December 26th to 41 minutes on Sunday!

And the best thing about March is the anticipation of our new puppy! She has been officially named “Fenway’. In 2005, Dave and I were invited to Boston on behalf of Saucony for the Boston Marathon and our friends at Saucony sent us to a baseball game at Fenway Park. It was such an amazing venue and I revelled at the dedication of the fans to their team! And it was on that trip that Dave bought me a diamond heart necklace from Tiffany’s – so Boston and Fenway hold great memories for us – dedication and diamonds!

We have her doggies name tag all ready with her phone number ready for her to make friends!

And all of her treats are waiting for her!! We get to pick her up on April 10th!

But first, we have one more fun training camp with some teenage athletes from Quebec starting on Friday! Once again, this will be a blast and it will make April an amazing month as well!

Thank you for your support, your health prayers and your kindnesses – I am back and better then ever! Lisa

This is what is going to get me over my speed bump. It isn’t a faster pair of Zipp wheels or a sleek Cervelo or a pair of Fastwitch racing flats – this is my IV antibiotics – my lastest ammunition against the bacteria which have decided to take up long term residence in my lungs for the past year!

As you may or may not know, I had planned to go to Florida to escape winter, to put on a few training camps, to train and to do my coaching and speaking work from there. But, we have not made it to Florida just yet!! . My lung health, as related to Cystic Fibrosis, has been very turbulent over the past year. For most of my life and professional athletic career, my lungs have been functioning at well over 100%. For the past 18 months, I have been growing a nasty bacteria called pseudomonas which is very difficult to eradicate. Since then, I have been on and off a variety of antibiotics and inhaled therapies. Despite all of this, my lung function, which measures the usable oxygen levels in the lungs, has been decreasing. After a rough race at Subaru Muskoka 70.3 last September, the doctors were convinced that I had an allergy to a bacteria in my lungs and started me on another course of drugs. But those drugs did nothing and so the allergy theory was dismissed. Then for the past 3 months, they have tried to figure out why my once perfect lungs were now functioning at about 80%. Therapies continued but my lungs continued to deteriorate until on January 1st, my symptoms worsened, my lungs were down to 72% and we began another course of antibiotics on January 5th.

On January 14, I was still feeling less than stellar with a major shortness of breath while walking and eating and doing daily activities despite 8 days on this wonder drug. Meanwhile I was still doing what I could swimming, biking and running since all of my sports are great lung therapies for clearing mucous. Of course, I was struggling doing my exercise but I always say that you do what you can with your deck of cards and my deck, at the moment, involved a bit more huffing and puffing. I went back to the CF clinic and despite 8 days of medicine, my lung function had dropped to 70% (from 72% on Jan 5th and from 98% in July!!). At that point, they wanted to admit me for IV antibiotics for 2 weeks. However, I was committed as a guest speaker on the Cruise to Run (besides, who would want to miss a Caribbean cruise) – so the doctors allowed me to go on the cruise while continuing the current course of antibiotics. I had to return to the CF Clinic on February 2nd to see how I was doing.

The Cruise to Run was amazing. I was probably the only person who began the cruise not feeling great but I finished the cruise feeling so much better – rested and breathing so much easier. The sun and the sea air and warmth and salt water made me feel so good. I ran and swam and water ran everyday – slowly of course, as dictated by my lungs – but I could run and swim and I loved it!! Yes, even my undertrained, but incredibly gifted husband Dave, ran faster than me, but I didn’t care – I loved every single minute of each run. I honestly thought that I would return to the CF Clinic and see a rise in my lung function.

But instead, I returned and despite 3 weeks on the medicine, my lung function was 66%! So I was admitted to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto that Tuesday!! Essentially, the pseudomonas bacteria had outwitted the antibiotic Ciprofloxacin and had thrived instead of being killed.

The doctors inserted a PICC line in my arm which is a catheter leading right to the Superior Vena Cava which goes right to my heart! It is a permanent IV line which can stay in place for 6 months to 1 year! They started the IV antibiotics on Wednesday. It is a 2 week course of IV antibiotics. They wanted to keep me in hospital for the entire administration of the drugs but if I could learn how to do the IV myself, then I could go home and have a nurse visit daily. So I learned the procedure (which was harder than I thought) and they released me on Friday.

So now, Dave and I flush the IV lines and hook up the IV at 6 a.m., 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. and we do chest physiotherapy and my inhaled medicine a few times per day – so it is about 5-6 hrs per day of healing. As my friend Janet Fraser said –“ I am on a training camp that is all about ‘healing’ right now!!”

Today marked 2 weeks on IV antibiotics and a return to the CF Clinic. I am feeling so much better and happier and healthier but my lungs are not quite back to their baseline just yet!! The plan is to continue on IV antibiotics for a bit longer – maybe another 2 weeks so that we can really deliver the eviction notice to these bacteria.

I am good – I am content – grateful that there is a solution. I am totally confident that the antibiotics will work. They are working already. I do not act or feel unwell. I actually never thought that my lungs would ever return to their baseline of 100% so this IV therapy is a true gift and blessing. I figured that the incredible athletic success that I had been blessed with for 20 years would now be replaced with the realities of CF and I was ok with that. I have lost about 1.5 litres of oxygen in the past year and I thought that THAT would be the new me. I got used to huffing and puffing while swimming, biking and running BUT I held onto the joy that at least I COULD swim, bike and run. But now, I have huge faith that I am going to get back to either 100% or very close to it. Whatever the result is, I am determined to never let it get in the way of living full and doing my sport forever. I may be slower but I will be healthy and happy and ready to share my 20 years of triathlon with others and ready to instil hope to families with CF that there is health beyond treatment, there is joy in being treated and that we can all be the best we can be with whatever health we have. I do not wish that I did not have CF – I have it for a reason and I will be the best wife, daughter, sister, friend, athlete, coach, mentor and motivational speaker with CF that I can be at every step of the journey – the easy steps and the not so easy steps.

Thanks for your support – I will be great – I just know it!

Oh yes – the red mitts – an affordable collector’s item – if you can find them. Dave and I bought red mitts for everyone at Christmas but we couldn’t find a large for Dave. So we sent the real shopper for them – mom! She looked under racks and tables and finally found a pair and wrapped them up for Dave for Christmas!

And this is a wonderful picture of my team – the Clean Air Champions. Look closely – you may see some current or former Olympians. As I said, the best VO2 max on the relay!

Now, it is back to normal life post Torchbearer Relay Fun. We celebrated New Years with some friends at our favorite restaurant – Spoon and Fork – in Oakville. It is a long way to Oakville from Caledon, but the food (Thai and Japanese) is amazing! And since then, it has been all about finishing the 2XU inventory for our accountant to balance the books. Stay tuned – Dave has set up online sales on www.2xushop.ca – I am not sure when it will be up and running – maybe it already is – but it will help you find the closest retailer with the 2XU items that you want and if that retailer doesn’t stock the item, then it will be shipped to you from the warehouse. So for all of you online shoppers that shop via US websites, now you can shop in Canada and not pay the duty! And then, I will have less merchandise to count for next year’s inventory!

Happy New Year!

Yes, it is official – I am an Olympic Torchbearer. It was quite an experience. If I were to describe it in a few words, I would say “family and friends and team” – that was what made this experience so special. I was so proud to be able to share this opportunity with so many people – Dave, mom and dad, sister Teresa and Luanne and hubby Mike and their friends, Dave’s family – Sue, Ray, Brittany and Braedan, our friends Bob, Karen and Ashley Rose, Don McCormick – my Muskoka family and then neighbors on our street. It was a ‘village celebration’.

My team, well that was the Clean Air Champions – CAC – a group of Olympic, Para-Olympic and National Team athletes who are all ambassadors for our environment. We were the biggest team to carry the Torch on the relay so far. We ran together for 1 km – and we each had our moment with the Torch for about 50-100 m. I kept teasing my teammates that we likely had the highest VO2 max and Anaerobic Threshold of any group so far to carry the Torch! We should have just kept on carrying it from Muskoka to the day’s final destination in North Bay.

Oh yes, and the very fact that I got to carry the Torch in Muskoka was so sentimental for me. I have raced triathlon in Muskoka since either 1990 or 1991. I have raced the National Champs, the World Champs, the regular Trisport Muskoka event (which was Royal le Page, Teleglobe, President’s Choice and now the Subaru Series), the Subaru Muskoka Chase and finally the Subaru Muskoka 70.3 event. And that history came full circle with my tiny little trek through Huntsville for 1 km!

And the family and friends part – well that was so special. We all came up the day before and enjoyed a few family hours playing at Deerhurst. My nephew and niece and their Uncle David and Bob and Ashley and I had some fun snow tubing – and my mom was even going to try it – not bad for a 75 year old woman!! We ran out of time so mom will do it next year since our visit to Deerhurst and Muskoka will become a yearly family fun holiday! Enjoy the photos!! Happy New Year!

Sorry about making our Subaru Muskoka 70.3 run up this hill in the race – remember the golf course .. here it is in winter .. perfect for tubing!

These are my Olympic cookies – little “Saucony” shoes made by Karen Rose and her daughter Ashley Rose – to celebrate the Torchbearer fun we are going to have tomorrow in Huntsville!!

Mom, Dad, sister Teresa, Dave’s family – Sue, Ray, Brittany and Braedan, our friends, Bob, Karen and Ashley Rose and of course, Dave and I, have all descended upon Deerhurst to begin the pre-Torchbearing festivities! Karen said she had a surprise and she was not kidding – they had made these sugar cookies – they had painted the Olympic rings on each and every cookie – 80 of them – what an unbelievable treat. Yes, the Rose family are the cream of the crop – beautiful and kind from head to toe!!

After settling into our rooms, we went for a walk and found a tubing hill on the golf course – yes, the golf course that we all ran on in the Subaru Muskoka 70.3 event in 2008! That was one heck of a fast, steep tubing hill – sorry athletes we made you run up it in the race! The kiddies (and Dave) had a blast snow tubing and I even did 3 runs on it! We had some good family fun in the -15 degrees celsius! Then it was back to our hospitality suite for some fun and then out for a family dinner at Swiss Chalet! Fiona, Nigel Gray’s sister, popped by for a great visit as well. Being at Deerhurst is kind of like having your family over to your house but it isn’t your house!! So far, this has been a terrific family celebration. My sister Luanne and hubby Mike drive up on Wednesday. Can’t wait until I get my hands on the Torch! More later!

On the last weekend of November, we had a little end of season party with the local athletes that we coach. Everyone came ready to run. We split into pairs and each pair had one mountain bike. The race is called a Ride and Tie whereby the pair must do the 6 km trail run/ride sharing one mountain bike. So, for example, let’s pretend Dave and I are partners (which we were) – he started the race on the bike and I ran. He biked for a few minutes and then he dropped the bike on the side of the trail and he started to run. Meanwhile, I am running and as soon as I see the bike, I stop running and start to ride and ride past Dave and then drop the bike and start to run. Then he rides. So it is like running intervals with bike intervals thrown in. Rich and Heather Pady added a baby jogger in for good measure and did not take a mountain bike while Matt did the whole run using Dave’s shoes and clothes.

The champion team was Jen Cooombs and hubby Mike Amaral – we picked them as the team to beat and sure enough they were on fire. The team of Tyler and Jody were 2nd. The Bob and Bryan squad stole our mountain bike and so they were demoted to 4th! Cracker and I were last but moved up to 3rd after the Bob/Bryan naughtiness but in reality we were ”the munters” .. but thankfully still ahead of the baby jogging duo of Heather and Rich.

Then it was back to the house for some chili and to watch the Grey Cup and re hash strategies for next year.

And by the way, the 2XU and Lisa B Sale went off well last weekend. We were able to raise $500 for the Adult CF Clinic at St. Michael’s hospital. Look for a 2XU sale in the spring with jackets, running gear, sublimated bike gear, tri suits and some wetsuits for sale at great prices.

I will be posting some stories from my fun weekend (actually 20 hours) in Moncton, New Brunswick soon. I am still recovering from the whirlwind trip and fun run with the Triathlon New Brunswick crew and the gang from Moncton Running Room! But for now, some news from Richard Pady. Rich is a well respected coach in Ontario (Healthy Results) - top age group athlete, former pro athlete and father of two beautiful kiddies. I coached him last year en route to his win at Triple T, 2nd at Lake Placid and qualification and gutsy race in Kona. If you need some winter indoor riding tips, then keep reading. He has created a non-glitzy but very motivating and informative tool to keep you company on your trainer this winter.

Richard Pady has created Indoor Rider. Indoor Rider is a series of cycling video workouts for you to download from Indoorrider.com once a week. The program builds you slowly, safely, and in the most time efficient way towards success. When you join, you are provided with a new video every week, each approximately one hour in length. You will increase your fitness and power while staying excited about your training and not getting bored this winter.

By following the program, you will train smart and avoid overtraining or burn out this season. The sessions allow you to work at your own level and progress at your own pace. Everyone has something to gain and learn from training with Coach Pady.

On top of the weekly videos you get the opportunity to workout with Olympic Gold and Silver medalist Simon Whitfield. Simon’s videos will be available to members with an annual subscription only.

Check it out.

I know that so many of you are wondering how I am feeling and if my lungs are any better after my most recent round of drugs. I started the nasties on the day after the Hawaii Ironman and each time I swallowed one, I was so scared of what I might feel like or look like. Ironically, after all of that fear, my side effects were pretty manageable. It was meant to throw my blood sugar into overdrive. They normally cause a moon face, weight gain and water retention. None of this happened. I am not a big sugar eater to start with and I am sure that my daily consumption of fish oil (Eico Pro) helped moderate all of my levels nicely. But, my energy was threw the roof. I was extremely aggitated and very hyper. I could not sleep. And then, I had wild and vivid dreams when I did sleep and I had a constant headache. So after 10 days, I went to St. Michael’s Hospital for my follow up to see if my lung function was back to 100%.

I am not sure if I should have been happy or sad but there was no change to my lung function. They were still at 81% – still down about 750 ml of oxygen – so the drugs did nothing! The good news was that I could stop taking them since they did not work! Hurray!!!! But the bad news was that I wasn’t any better and we were back to trying to figure out why my once healthy lungs – lungs that won 11 Ironman races – were now functioning at an almost recreational level!

So we are back to assuming that I must have pseudomonas growing in my lungs and I will go back to my Tobramycin inhalation – twice per day for 20 minutes by nebulizer. But the silver lining is that I thought that they might admit me to hospital for IV antibiotics. Instead, I get to inhale the IV antibiotics at home. I am not sure how long we will do this for – I did it for 4 months from February to June earlier this year – so that obviously wasn’t enough. Regardless, I am just so happy to be off those drugs! And the reality is that I have cheated CF for the past 20 years while I ran around the world racing in a bathing suit and winning races! I have been so lucky and so blessed. Do not worry or feel sorry for me – I am still swimming, biking and running – just not as fast and hard as I did a year ago which means that I celebrate the freshly fallen leaves and the sun shining way more than before.

I often look back at Subaru Muskoka Ironma 70.3 and can’t believe that I felt so unwell and wonder why I even started that race. But as I said then and I repeat now – I still had 81% of my lungs working and that is a lot more than most people with CF. And so for those people with CF that struggle to breathe when they climb stairs or take a shower – I got to race – maybe not like a professional but like a human being!

And that brings me to an article that I read in the paper today. There is a woman named Natalie. She has CF and she is very sick. She only has about 18% of her lungs functioning. She is waiting for a lung transplant at St. Michael’s Hospital. If she doesn’t get a new pair of lungs, she will die. This will not happen to me, but it may happen to her. All it takes is for someone to sign their donor card – if one person dies at St. Mike’s and they have signed their donor card, then she might be reborn with a new pair of lungs. Please read her story – it makes me feel so lucky. We are all so lucky.

Her story is here http://www.healthzone.ca/health/illnessesissues/article/716418–dying-mom-keeps-online-diary-for-baby?bn=1

In the meantime, I am swimming, biking and running for Natalie! Be well.

I think I am going to call July, the curveball month! So much happens every single day of my life – most of it is pretty awesome – but sometimes, it is anti-awesome!

The awesome July stuff: I finally bumped up my long run past 90 minutes to a whopping 2 hours! In the interest of my heel health, I have been limiting my long runs and adding more intensity but I really do believe in building strength with those over distance sessions and since I am back running in proper Saucony training shoes (the flavour of July is the GRID RIDE and the TYPE A2), then I can handle proper long runs. So the 2 hour runs have been amazing but I am definitely feeling the fatigue factor.

I also re-introduced some strength training with Steve Hill at Kings Cross physiotherapy clinic and some plyometric circuit training. Now, instead of jumping out of bed in the morning, I get up very gingerly. Honestly, my legs are always aching now – but his will pay off at Subaru Muskoka Ironman 70.3!

We had our Subaru Muskoka 70.3 Success Camp and that was a blast as usual. Our athletes were amazing and we introduced a shorter bike ride which was a big hit with the first time 70.3 athletes in particular. The new run course is absolutely brilliant and the lake was actually ‘warm’! And even more awesome was that we did not get rained on at all – zip – nil – nothing! The rain began once we finished our bike and run on the course. In fact, the rain rolled in as we were enjoying Sunday brunch at Deerhurst! Yes, I planned it that way for sure!

And, of course, watching the Tour de France was awesome! Lance was brilliant in 3rd. The lesson for all of us is that 3rd is winning or 5th is winning or 278th is winning. It is all winning if you do it with purpose.

The anti-awesome: I got a wicked case of the flu at the very end of June on the day of the Peachbud 10 km. I came home from my 5:30 a.m. swim and I was tired so I went to bed and I pretty much stayed there all day. I got up around 3:30 p.m. and I put on my racing kit and got ready to head to the 7:30 p.m. race but I was so achy and tired. We started to drive and I thought that I would just cheer and not race since I felt unwell and then I realized that I did not feel well enough even to cheer. So we went home and I went back to bed. I felt pretty unwell for about 5 days. I tried a bike ride 5 days later and I could only manage 110 watts! That is shocking when I generally race at 200 watts! And ‘race’ was in my brain because I was meant to race at the Amica Providence 70.3 that weekend. I love that race and I so badly wanted to defend my 2008 win. But I had to miss it – I just wasn’t 100%. For some reason, the race still posted a swim and a bike for me and we had lots of phone calls wondering why I did not finish the race. I did not start the race – I did not drive to the race – I did not leave Canada!!

The only good thing about the flu was that I got to spend some nice time with Dave and Madison – our 13 year old Lab! She had become a finicky eater after Brunswick went to heaven and so she needed an extra bit of love. I would make her chicken, rice and vegetable for dinner and put her meals in little zip loc bags (yes, one day, I was hungry and I ate one – sorry Madison!). But she would generally enjoy a particular food item for a few days and then stop eating it. We bought canned food for her – she ate that for a few days and stopped. We made hamburger for her and then scrambled eggs – again – she ate it for a few days and then stopped. Basically, we would lay on the floor with her and line up all the possibilities and hope she would eat – yogurt, Millet Rice cereal, crackers, even our friend’s home made cake – and it would work for a bit and then lose its appeal.

Two weeks ago, we took her to our vet and figured it was either behavioural since her best friend, Brunswick, was gone, or it could be her liver. Tests revealed that her liver enzyme was 10 times normal and she was in the final stage of liver disease. Anti-awesome for sure!

They recommended that we enjoy her for a few days and then say goodbye. We went for great walks in the conservation area and went swimming and fetched sticks in the lake. She was absolutely our normal, playful Maddy at all times except at meal time but she was still eating at least. She was so happy that we could not possibly say goodbye! It was about 10 days later – Wednesday – we saw that she was retaining fluid in her tummy and her finicky appetite was now no appetite. We booked a vet appointment for some advice – Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Thursday was a day not to be forgotten! It was rainy. We walked Maddy – she was her normal self. I swam. Both Dave and I had big long cuddles with Maddy. I had a long ride to do but did it on the computrainer so that I could stay close to Madison and thankfully it was raining so I really had no choice. Two hours into my ride, Dave phoned – he had been in a car accident 2 km from home – another vehicle ran a red light and hit him on the passenger side. He was 100% fine! Our Subaru Forester was a tank – it held its’ ground. The other car was totalled but the driver was fine. Off I went to the accident thinking how lucky we were that Madison wasn’t in the passenger seat since she often came with us on our little errands. We sorted out the police report and insurance. We picked up a loaner car from Subaru of Brampton and we were done! Emotionally we were also done for the day and I wanted to cancel the vet appointment at 4:30 p.m. But we kept it because it was best for Madison.

The vet said that Madison’s tummy was full of fluid and that it would be best to say goodbye. “What, no final walk? No final sleep at home? No final play in the lake? Right now?”

The only good thing is that Madison did not suffer – she was uncomfortable – sort of like the flu – but she was not in acute pain. And Madison is with Brunswick in Heaven. I guess, like any parent, we are doing the suffering now since we miss her and Brunswick so very much. They were a huge part of our lives – they were the reason I trained in Florida rather than Australia over the winter – because we could drive there with them in the back seat. They were the reason we rarely stayed to enjoy race locations after the race – we wanted to get home to our family. But they were also the reason our lives were filled with so much love and will continue to be filled with love as we recall their antics.

Yes, Thursday was a tough day and night but at least I didn’t have to leave the vet clinic and go visit Dave in the hospital! I am pretty thankful to my Subaru Forester for keeping Dave safe!

Now, I am preparing to leave to race Viterra Calgary Ironman 70.3 on August 2nd. I am still struggling with my own lung issues – still using my nebulizer and compressor – but now I am breathing in saline solution and trying to clear my lungs. I will need them clear so that I can fill them with lots of oxygen as I push myself to race at my best this weekend! Dave and I are also involved with the event on an organizational level so this will definitely be a very full weekend. And I plan to make it an AWESOME WEEKEND and a start to an only AWESOME AUGUST!

Be well – hug your puppies and your kiddies – fill your life with love – scatter sunshine.
